How Do I Add UPC Barcodes to My Products?
Short answer
UPC barcodes let PricePilot match your products to specific market competitors for precise pricing recommendations. Without them, you'll still get category-level market benchmarks — but adding UPCs upgrades your report from directional to exact.
The full answer
You probably already have barcodes on your packaging. The step most founders skip is getting them into their POS system. Once they're there, PricePilot can match each product to its market equivalent and show you exactly where your price sits relative to the competition.
In Shopify: go to Products, click any product, scroll to the Inventory section, and enter the barcode in the Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.) field. If you have many products, use Shopify's bulk editor or export/import via CSV — the column is called 'Variant Barcode'.
In Square: open your Item Library, click an item, and enter the barcode in the GTIN field under Item Details. Square accepts UPC, EAN, and ISBN formats. For bulk updates, export your Item Library, add barcodes in the GTIN column, and re-import.
If you don't have UPC barcodes yet, the official source is GS1 US (gs1us.org). A single barcode costs about $30 with an annual renewal. If you're selling through retailers who require GTINs, this is a one-time setup that pays for itself. Reseller options exist but aren't recommended for retail channels that verify barcode ownership.
Even without UPCs, PricePilot gives you category-level market benchmarks — how your prices compare to the broader market. But with UPCs, every product gets matched to a specific competitor, and your recommendations go from directional to precise.
Related questions
What's the difference between UPC, EAN, and GTIN?
UPC is a 12-digit barcode used in North America. EAN is a 13-digit international equivalent. GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is the umbrella term that covers both. PricePilot accepts all three formats.
Do I need UPCs to use PricePilot?
No. PricePilot works without UPCs by comparing your prices against category-level market averages. UPCs just unlock more precise, product-specific benchmarks.
Can I add UPCs after I've already run a report?
Yes. Add UPCs to your POS system, export a fresh file, and upload again. Your next report will include the specific competitor matches.
